Four Eyed Monsters

“Four Eyed Monsters” — a labor of love for Susan Buice and her boyfriend, Arin Crumley — screens Thursdays in September in six cities nationwide, thanks in large part to video podcasts that Buice and Crumley created to help people discover their film. Posted on their website, iTunes, MySpace, and YouTube, the podcasts found a spot on Apple’s daily top 100 podcasts and have generated enough word of mouth to get the film into 18 festivals worldwide and screenings in six cities.

By Word of Net

“When we first played film festivals,” Crumley says, “we hoped someone would take the film and release it to the world. That never happened, so we decided to make a video podcast and build our own audience.”

Buice and Crumley posted a mini podcast the day Apple introduced the video iPod. It triggered heavy online buzz and press attention — enough to build anticipation for the “Four Eyed Monsters” video podcast. Since then, Bruice and Crumley published eight episodes as well as news updates — which, many say, are almost as entertaining as their feature film.

Lonelygirl15: The Creators Revealed - Los Angeles Times

It turns out the people behind the wildly popular website lonelygirl15 are not studio executives, Internet moguls or, as some suspected, Satanists. Instead, they are aspiring filmmakers who met at a mutual friend's birthday party in April: Miles Beckett, 28, a Web-obsessed medical school dropout, Mesh Flinders, 26, a screenwriter, and Greg Goodfried, a 27-year-old lawyer.

The lonelygirl15 story unfolded in a series of confessional video blogs, supposedly made by a home-schooled girl named "Bree," Since June, viewers have questioned whether "Bree" and her friend "Daniel," who also appeared in the videos, were for real or part of some larger project or promotional scheme. An ominous hint of a satanic plotline to come suggested a horror film in the making.

In their first press interview, the three said they are amazed by the reaction they have gotten, with audiences in the hundreds of thousands for each episode of their story, which was posted on websites such as YouTube.

"We did this with zero resources. Anybody could do what we did," Flinders said Tuesday. The sum total of the equipment they used to create a sensation on the Internet, as well as perhaps the Web's biggest homegrown mystery: "Two desk lamps, one broken, an open window and a $130 camera.",1,3672640.story?coll=la-headlines-entnews

Trump U and me: E-mail from the Donald

OTTAWA - For the past several months, Donald Trump has been wooing me. He's been courting me by e-mail, promising to take me under his wing and inviting me to join his exclusive new club. But now, the Donald won't even return my phone calls.

His first message seemed so absurd, I was tempted to hit the delete key. The subject line read: "A personal invitation from Donald J. Trump. RSVP.'' But the real-estate mogul/billionaire's name piqued my curiosity, and I couldn't trash the e-mail. Was this legitimate? When I opened the message, I had my answer: There was the orange-haired tycoon himself, with a video clip to accompany his letter.

"I am searching for a few like-minded people to share my personal wealth-building strategies with,'' he wrote. ``I have contacted you because I believe you're the type of person who would appreciate this approach.''

I had been personally chosen to join the Trump Real Estate Alliance, he wrote, "as you have previously expressed a desire in making more money.''

I did?

He continued, "I want you to become part of an elite wealth building team that works under my direction. Trust me, you are going to want to be part of this team.''

It sounded like classic Trump hyperbole. But I read on. For a mere $39.95, I would receive a five-book package, complete with a coaching DVD, in which Trump talks at me on a variety of business themes. And he offered a 30-day, ``100-per-cent-fire-me'' guarantee.

"You know I don't put my name on anything lightly. It has to be the best -- or else it's fired.''

This could be interesting, I thought. I have no experience in real estate, but that's OK; Trump tells me I don't need any. Having long searched for a suitable mentor, here I find Donald Trump offering his services -- and a crash course in real estate -- for under $40.
