Diary of a Crossword Fiend

http://crosswordfiend.blogspot.com/

Hobo Teacher Dot Com

You see, here's how it all started.  We're teachers.  We love teaching but, the thing is, it doesn't really pay the bills.  As a matter of fact, we picked up odd jobs along the way to help make ends meet.  This really takes its toll when you add on the countless hours already spent at school, the lack of sunlight, and the hazards of the job (Have you ever spent an hour and a half with 30 hormonal teenagers? Of course you have.).

You find yourself drawn to signs that promise, "Free samples!"  Coupons become your best friend.  Major decisions turn on a dime.  Your social schedule is determined by how much change you have in the ashtray of your car.

It creeps up on you until eventually, you embrace your situation.  You work through your twenty-minute lunch.  You eat less.  You sleep less.  You take students' work to bed with you.  You bathe less.  You shave less.  You see "home" less.  You become… Hobo Teacher.

And, often we resort to humor.  We poke fun at the situation to make ourselves feel better.  We laugh because a college degree does not equal a normal life.  As ridiculous as this all sounds, it happens.  So, is it so crazy to imagine Hobo Teacher?

But, Hobo Teacher isn't beaten.  He loves his job.  He's got his students.  He's got a place to sleep at night.  He's resourceful.  And God bless him, for some reason, he loves his life.

Teachers can't afford much, but they can afford to laugh.

Sincerely,

The Hobo Teacher Team
Hobo Teacher, Inc.

Quoddy Trail Moccasin Company - Made In Maine

About Quoddy Trail Moccasin . . .

The Shorey family has been making moccasins for generations, beginning with Harry Smith Shorey, a handsewer for L.L. Bean in the early 1900s. Today, we continue this fine tradition with Quoddy Trail. In Downeast Maine, near the shore of the Passamaquoddy Bay, we make traditional moccasin styles using time-honored techniques and quality materials.
Each process is done by hand — cutting, skiving, stitching, and handsewing.
All of our styles have in common a one-piece vamp, which wraps around the entire foot. This is handsewn to the "tip" with locked stitches to ensure comfort and durability, the two most important benefits of moccasin construction. All styles, soled or unsoled, have full leather sock liners (not just half) and heel padding for added comfort and cushioning.
With Quoddy Trail, you receive a genuine handmade moccasin. While leather properties vary slightly with every hide, each pair demonstrates our philosophy: Attention to detail and no shortcuts. Also, many of our moccasins can be made in special widths or sizes . . . without an outsized pricetag.
Let us know if you need more specs, information, or literature.
Thank you for your interest in Quoddy Trail Moccasin Company!

Never underestimate the depth of a curious mind.

I'm one of those introspective, non-threatening, geeky, safe as milk types. Think Linus and/or Franklin from the Peanuts comic strip. I drink some, but I don't do drugs or smoke. I am also a music lover (contemporary jazz, rock, pop, R&B), bookworm (especially history, pop culture & architecture), architect (favorites: Palladio, Wright, Robert A.M. Stern), shopping fanatic (malls rock), budding (if not exceptional) chef, closet techno-geek (viva Macintosh).

Food Allergy Initiative

The Food Allergy Initiative (FAI) is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization that raises funds toward the effective treatment and cure for food allergies.

Food allergies differ from other allergies because a minuscule amount of the wrong food can be fatal. Today, it is estimated that 11,000,000 Americans are affected by food allergies, 30,000 visit emergency rooms, and hundreds die each year.

FAI is the first organization dedicated to a strategic, comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach to food allergies. Our program is designed to help the millions of children and adults who live in fear of eating the wrong food with every bite they take.

Funds raised by FAI are invested in research that seeks to find a cure and improve clinical treatment. FAI has established a Medical Advisory Board to identify and recommend the most promising research in the United States and around the world. FAI also provides grants to entities that serve and support food allergic patients and their families at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City.

In addition, it is FAI's mission to raise public awareness about the seriousness of food allergies. Through effective educational programs and public information, FAI heightens awareness of food allergies and the danger of anaphylaxis among the media, health care workers, education and child care professionals, while also working with the nation's policy makers to create a safer environment and improve care for the food allergic population.
