Queneau Home

Queneau's Cent Mille Milliards de Poèmes is derived from a set of ten basic sonnets. In his book, published in 1961, they are printed on card with each line on a separated strip, like a heads-bodies-and-legs book. All ten sonnets have the same rhyme scheme and employ the same rhyme sounds. As a result, any line from a sonnet can be combined with any from the other nine, giving 1014 (= 100,000,000,000,000) different poems. Working twenty-four hours a day, it would you take some 140,000,000 years to read them all.

Quneau's writing in general does not leave the reader with a sense of narrative comfort; these sonnets are no exception. Since the randomization would destroy whatever narrative there is, this is no real problem. It also allows a translator some freedom but I have tried to stay close to the original.

Even if they lack narrrative, each of the basic sonnets has a theme: 1 - South America, 2 - ancient Greece, 3 - the sea, 4 - India, 5 - Italy, 6 - visiting Paris, 7 - twinhood, 8 - poetry, 9 - food and drink, 10 - death.

Channel Frederator

Channel Frederator
Cartoon Central for the Internet
Once upon a time in a far away land called “The 90s,” a guy named Fred had a big idea: A new Cable TV Network that would be the central hub for all things Comedy. It wouldn’t be just another place for funny stuff on a comedy saturated TV dial. It would be the place that young, hot, hip, upstart comedy creators would flock to. The place they would want to be.

That cable comedy mecca now exists. It’s called Comedy Central. And the Comedy Central of today is not that far off from the one Fred envisioned all those years ago.

Now the “See Change” caused by the explosion of video content on the Internet has caused Fred to have a new vision. Fred now sees a place on the Internet that will be THE central hub for hot, hip, upstart animators. A constantly flowing festival of great cartoons—a new film festival every week! A place that will present all animation styles (Claymation, Stop motion, 2D, 3D… 4D if you’ve got it!)

Edge: A SHORT COURSE IN THINKING ABOUT THINKING — "A Master Class" By Danny Kahneman

Recently, I spent several months working closely with Danny Kahneman, the psychologist who is the co-creator of behavioral economics (with his late collaborator Amos Tversky), for which he won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2002.

My discussions with him inspired a 2-day "Master Class" given by Kahneman for a group of twenty leading American business/Internet/culture innovators—a microcosm of the recently dominant sector of American business—in Napa, California in July. They came to hear him lecture on his ideas and research in diverse fields such as human judgment, decision making and behavioral economics and well-being.

While Kahneman has a wide following among people who study risk, decision-making, and other aspects of human judgment, he is not exactly a household name. Yet among many of the top thinkers in psychology, he ranks at the top of the field.

Harvard psychologist Daniel Gilbert (Stumbling on Happiness) writes: "Danny Kahneman is simply the most distinguished living psychologist in the world, bar none. Trying to say something smart about Danny's contributions to science is like trying to say something smart about water: It is everywhere, in everything, and a world without it would be a world unimaginably different than this one." And according to Harvard's Steven Pinker (The Stuff of Thought): "It's not an exaggeration to say that Kahneman is one of the most influential psychologists in history and certainly the most important psychologist alive today. He has made seminal contributions over a wide range of fields including social psychology, cognitive science, reasoning and thinking, and behavioral economics, a field he and his partner Amos Tversky invented."

"Fantastically stimulating...It's like the crack cocaine of the thinking world.... Once you start, you can't stop thinking about that question."

Alex the parrot

The Alex Foundation

Known as one of the most famous African Grey parrots in history, Alex pioneered new avenues in avian intelligence. He possessed more than 100 vocal labels for different objects, actions, colors and could identify certain objects by their particular material. He could count object sets up to the total number six and was working on seven and eight. Alex exhibited math skills that were considered advanced in animal intelligence, developing his own "zero-like" concept in addition to being able to infer the connection between written numerals, objects sets, and the vocalization of the number. Alex was learning to read the sounds of various letters and had a concept of phonemes, the sounds that make up words.

Alex's personality was very evident in his everyday life. He was "in charge" of his home and relished ordering "his" humans to perform various tasks for him. He also acted as a coach and cheerleader to his fellow birds, Wart and Griffin, alternately encouraging or admonishing them during their lessons. His favorite toys were cardboard boxes, key chains and corks.

Purchased from a Chicago pet store in June, 1977, at that time he was 12 to 13 months old. Alex came from humble beginnings. Alex's accomplishments proved that all African Grey parrots have an intelligence far beyond what was previously thought before his decades-long work with Dr. Pepperberg. Sadly, Alex passed way on September 6, 2007, dying of unknown causes. He was 31 years old.

We miss him dearly.
