The comparison shopper - photography

The comparison shopper

There are so many mfrs.: Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, Sony, Samsung etc. One makes sensors; the others make LCD-panels and some of them only assemble devices, which is best? What's I need – a DSLR or Compact Camera? What should buy first: HD-camcorder or LCD-panel with 1980x1080 resolutions? And they all try to persuade us they make what we need – buy it! How to make a right choice and not to pay for useless gadgets?

African Painters

African Painters

Here is a blog about contemporary art on and off the continent of Africa. To push forward the concept of African cultural development I have created this blog but more importantly than that it's a place where we can blow-off steam and discuss the impossible task of defining a continent.

The iPod lecture circuit - Los Angeles Times

Technology is bringing the ivory tower to big rigs and fishing boats, offering the chance to study existentialism or theoretical physics.
By Michelle Quinn, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
November 24, 2007
BERKELEY -- Baxter Wood is one of Hubert Dreyfus' most devoted students. During lectures on existentialism, Wood hangs on every word, savoring the moments when the 78-year-old philosophy professor pauses to consider a student's comment or relay how a meaning-of-life question had him up at 2 a.m.

But Wood is not sitting in a lecture hall on the UC Berkeley campus, nor has he met Dreyfus. He is in the cab of his 18-wheel big rig, hauling dog food from Ohio to the West Coast or flat-screen TVs from Los Angeles to points east. The 61-year-old trucker from El Paso eavesdrops on the lectures by downloading them for free from Apple Inc.'s iTunes store, transferring them to his Hewlett-Packard digital media player, then piping them through his cabin's speakers. He hits pause as he approaches cities so he can focus more on traffic than on what Nietzsche meant when he said God was dead, then shifts his attention back to the classroom.

"I'm really in two places at once," he said. "The sound of chalk on the chalkboard makes it so real."

The $363 19-inch dual-core all-in-one LCD PC | George Ou | ZDNet.com

This is the new all-in-one Intel dual-core 2.0 GHz E2180 19″ LCD PC
computer I built for the family. The shocker is that I did it for less
than $363 in parts (not including keyboard and mouse). The 19″ LCD
(1440×900 resolution) was on sale for $140 and the dual-core Intel
CPU/Motherboard/graphics was on sale at Fry's for an eye-popping $88 and
I just couldn't resist the temptation to build a nice all-in-one for the
kitchen/dining area. I got a 300 GB hard drive for $50 and 1 GB of RAM
for $30 (with an additional $20 rebate) and I used a $50 energy
efficient "80 plus" 220 watt 1U power supply. For the chassis I used
some scrap wood I had left over and spent 4 hours on a Sunday afternoon
building this computer.

Soup Up Your Cellphone - New York Times

Widgets are small applications, most often free, that appear on your phone's menu pages. They deliver news or information to most handsets. You can use them to track down a cab company or follow stock prices. Other widgets deliver maps or headlines from media sources like the BBC, Bloomberg and this newspaper. For anyone with a smartphone that has the ability to connect to the Internet, it might make sense to simply use the included Web browser to visit Google Maps, YouTube and such, but if you're looking to extend the life of an older handset, widgets are a good option.

Widgets will not turn your vintage Motorola StarTAC into an iPhone, but they will add features and functions that you didn't think your phone could ever possess. There are several Web sites that offer widgets like GetMobio.com, Plusmo.com, Openwave.com and WidSets.com.

WidSets is one of the most popular such places because it has a large library of more than 2,650 widgets that work on more than 300 devices from all the leading manufacturers, even though the site is affiliated with Nokia, the world's largest maker of handsets. Most phones made in the last three years are supported by WidSets, including golden oldies like the Motorola RAZR V3.

GetMobio has fewer widgets and supports about 90 phones, but among its widgets are a cheap-gas finder, a store locator and something called the Panic Kit, which locates locksmiths, cab companies and pharmacies at the spur of the moment. Plusmo's roster is not as extensive, but among its widgets are applications to bring in news from CNN and a daily Peanuts cartoon.

One-Way Street

One-Way Street (Einbahnstrasse) was Walter Benjamin's first effort to break out of the narrow confines of the academy and apply the techniques of literary studies to life as it is currently lived. For Benjamin criticism encompasses the ordinary objects of life, the literary texts of the time, films in current release, and the fleeting concerns of the public sphere. Following Benjamin's lead, this blog is concerned with the political content of the aesthetic and representations of the political in the media. As Benjamin writes in One-Way Street, "He who cannot take sides should keep silent."

The Chipotle Diet - Chipotle Diet Blogurrito

Chipotle Diet - I Lost 42 pounds!

Week 12 ends.  I lost another 4 pounds!

Thirteen burritos this week.  Well, it seems as though Saturday night is usually the night that I miss a burrito.  I went out to dinner with family.  I ordered the smallest steak they offered (7 oz filet).  I had a salad and brocolli.  No bread.  Basically low-carb choices will get me through to my next burrito.
After 12 weeks I finally got off the couch.  I did some push-ups and sit-ups before bed on Wednesday night.  But, my first official workout was Saturday morning. Strength training.  Also started walking 20-30 minutes a day.  I am very sore today.
