Slate's special issue on procrastination. - - Slate Magazine

Just Don't Do It

Maybe you didn't care for our package on weddings last summer. Perhaps you weren't interested in the fall book blitz. You might even have skipped over our blowout neuroscience spectacular. Hey man, that's cool. Different strokes for different folks, am I right?

Not anymore. For the next three days, Slate will put aside the special interests and present, for the first time, a package of stories that will appeal to every single person reading the magazine. It's time for us to speak out on something that matters to all of you, regardless of class or creed; it's time to unite behind a common problem and a common dream.

Welcome, my friends, to Slate's special issue on "procrastination."

Iraq Veterans Against the War

Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) was founded by Iraq war veterans in July 2004 at the annual convention of Veterans for Peace (VFP) in Boston to give a voice to the large number of active duty service people and veterans who are against this war, but are under various pressures to remain silent.

From its inception, IVAW has called for:

  • Immediate withdrawal of all occupying forces in Iraq;
  • Reparations for the human and structural damages Iraq has suffered, and stopping the corporate pillaging of Iraq so that their people can control their own lives and future; and
  • Full benefits, adequate healthcare (including mental health), and other supports for returning servicemen and women.

Our membership includes recent veterans and active duty servicemen and women from all branches of military service, National Guard members, and reservists who have served in the United States military since September 11, 2001.

IVAW's strategy is to mobilize the military community to withdraw its support for the war and occupation in Iraq. Therefore, IVAW is leading the movement of veterans and GIs who are working to bring the troops home now.

Google Sky

Traveling to the stars has never been easier.

To help you explore the far reaches of our universe, we have teamed up with astronomers at some of the largest observatories in the world to bring you a new view of the sky. Using Google Maps this tool provides an exciting way to browse and explore the universe. You can find the positions of the planets and constellations on the sky and even watching the birth of distant galaxies as seen by the Hubble Space Telescope.

We are particularly excited about the ability to view the universe at different wavelengths, to see how it would look if our eyes worked in the x-rays or infrared. As you explore these new layers, play with the transparency to blend between the different wavelengths and see how different parts of the universe light up at different wavelengths

If you are interested in what's happening on the sky tonight or over the next few months then check out the podcasts from Earth and Sky or search for the position of your favorite planet.

The Ultimate Cheesesteak Challenge- Glen Macnow`s Search For The Best Cheesesteaks In Philadelphia And Beyond

This much we've learned living in this town for more than a few decades: You can question a man's choice of women or criticize his wheels. You might even get away with slamming his favorite sport's team. But rip on his No. 1 cheesesteak? Them's fighting words.
"You've got a death wish," a friend warned me when I announced plans to focus this year's food hunt on this down's native specialty. "Cheesesteaks are like religion," said another. "People get crazy if you don't see it their way."
Perhaps. But after spending our last three food hunts on burgers (The winner: Rossi's Bar & Grill in Trenton), ribs (Fat Jack's in Clementon) and pizza (Tacconelli's in Port Richmond), we're ready to tackle the toughest project.
Not that it will be tough to find a great steak. This is, of course, where the product was invented, and everyone has his favorite spot – usually just around the corner. Point is, wherever you live, you don't have to travel far to get good cheesesteak.
But I am looking for better than good. I want the perfect mix of fresh bread, top-grade All-American beef and melty cheese – with just the right amount of grease,
Thus, allow me to present 'Glen Macnow's Ultimate Cheese Challenge."
Over the course of the next six weeks, I plan to sample every top-grade cheesesteak in the Delaware Valley. With the help of my ultra-secret tasting crew, we will rank them all. I'll read all the reviews on the air and keep updating the rankings on this site.

address. Any e-mails sent to that address will show up automatically on
the web page. You can read them, click on links, and even reply to them.
The e-mail address will expire after 10 minutes.

Why would you use this? Maybe you want to sign up for a site which
requires that you provide an e-mail address to send a validation e-mail
to. And maybe you don't want to give up your real e-mail address and end
up on a bunch of spam lists. This is nice and disposable. And it's free.

The Spot: A man demonstrates an absorbent towel called the "Shamwow." It cleans up spills, polishes cars, washes dishes, and so forth. "Eight Shamwows for $19.95," goes the salesman's closing argument. "Comes with a 10-year warranty. Here's how to order."

The Largest Minority

We support global resistance over domestic obedience, and transformative revolution over toothless reform. We believe that the importance of upholding human rights and the protection of the environment supersedes politics and economics. A more unified and confrontational approach needs to be adopted. And lastly, we believe in the advancement of the arts as not only a channel for communication, but as the adhesive which binds humanity.

Powerset - Search and discovery experience for Wikipedia

Powerset's goal is to change the way people interact with technology by enabling computers to understand our language. While this is a difficult challenge, we believe that now is the right time to begin the journey. Powerset is first applying its natural language processing to search, aiming to improve the way we find information by unlocking the meaning encoded in ordinary human language.

Powerset's first product is a search and discovery experience for Wikipedia, launched in May 2008. Powerset's technology improves the entire search process. In the search box, you can express yourself in keywords, phrases, or simple questions. On the search results page, Powerset gives more accurate results, often answering questions directly, and aggregates information from across multiple articles. Finally, Powerset's technology follows you into enhanced Wikipedia articles, giving you a better way to quickly digest and navigate content. - Stories from your friends on the road
