McCain I Am 100

Jet Set, Meet the Bus Bunch -

Starting about a dozen years ago with the so-called Chinatown buses, which were the first to offer a minimum of frills (and schedules), Route I-95 between Boston and Washington has become jammed with cheap express buses with jazzy names and the design and Web sites to match: BoltBus (online, tap a key and watch lightning strike!), Megabus (a huge, cherubic driver is emblazoned on the side of the bus), DC2NY, Washington Deluxe and others.

Capitalizing on the success of those first Chinatown buses, the big boys got into the business — BoltBus is owned by Greyhound, and Megabus by a large Scottish transportation company, Stagecoach Group, through its subsidiary Coach USA. As the companies refine their service, the cheap express bus experience just keeps changing, competing to offer amenities: BoltBus now offers plugs for electrical appliances; Washington Deluxe has just added Dupont Circle to its list of Washington stops.

Judging by a recent round trip from New York to Washington — down on BoltBus, back on Megabus — the changes are being seen and, for the most part, appreciated by the passengers, a surprisingly diverse group.

They were teenagers, New Yorkers, members of "the greatest
generation," when the world suffered through the economic and geo-
political upheaval of World War II. Many years later, thanks to the
PBS station WNET, they sat across from six high school filmmakers to
tell the story of what it was like to live during those tumultuous
times. Enoy Over Here on iTunes U.

Why and why now?  Good questions.

I spent four years in federal prison.  During that time I received dozens of requests for information and interviews on the subjects of Rudy Giuliani and the Giuliani Administration.  Most were from news outlets: magazines, newspapers and television.  Some came from people wanting to write about Rudy and wanting new information or to confirm existing facts.  A few were from average Joes and Janes wanting some question answered. How they got my name or why they were writing me, I have no idea.

With one exception, and that was just days before I left prison, I never responded to a single request.  Sure there were probably hundreds of times that I read an article, heard a newscast or saw a commentator pontificate on some point relating to Rudy Giuliani with which I wanted to respond, elaborate or correct.  But I never did.

Why given his high profile and controversial past has no one close to him come out to give behind the scenes details of life in the Administration?  To answer that question you have to know Rudy's love of "The Godfather" and the belief that you never speak ill of the family with outsiders.  Some would say loyalty others would say fear. No, there's no threat of death.  But it simply isn't done.  Giuliani people, and I would include myself - at least back then - were a vengeful lot.  We payed back and we never forgot.

The Motley Moose - Progress Through Politics

The Motley Moose was born from the ashes of the 2008 Democratic primary wars. The site was a joint effort by twenty-five active political bloggers who had become tired of the trolling and flame wars found on many political sites. The idea was to build a post-primary site that could move forward instead of looking back.

there is no money left anywhere and they have the Only solutions.

That is completely false and to prove it we are offering our

The REAL John McCain

John McCain vs. John McCain

McCain's YouTube Problem

As you may have heard, I've decided to make my new film, "Slacker Uprising," available for free to everyone in the United States and Canada. It is the first time ever that a major feature-length film is debuting as a free download on the internet -- legally. I am doing this for two reasons:

  1. Next year it will be 20 years since my first film, "Roger & Me," so I'd like to give those of you who've supported my work over the years a thank you gift in the form of a brand new movie; and
  2. I hope the release and wide distribution of this new movie will help to bring out millions of young and new voters on November 4th
"Slacker Uprising" takes place in the wake of "Fahrenheit 9/11," during the run-up to the 2004 election, as I traveled for 42 days across America, visiting 62 cities in a failed attempt to remove George W. Bush from office. My goal was to help turn out a record number of young voters and others who had never voted before. (That part was a success. Young adults voted in greater numbers than in any election since 18-year-olds were given the right to vote. And the youth vote was the only age group that John Kerry won.)

What I encountered during the tour and the filming was both inspiring and frightening, so I thought, hey, this might make for a funny and enlightening movie! Each night, thousands would show up to volunteer in the Slacker Army against Bush. This drove local Republicans nuts. In one state they tried to have me arrested. At two colleges, rich donors offered to donate more money to the college if they would ban me from campus. Nearly a half-dozen universities kept the Slacker Uprising tour off their campuses. But there was no stopping this movement. By the time we got to Florida, 16,000 people a night were showing up.

It was clear that young people were the ones who were going to save the day -- just as they are in this year's election.

We've got a great service for great shows. A new class of entertainment is emerging that is being made by the people without the support of billion-dollar multinationals. Our mission is to support these people by taking care of all the problems a budding videoblogger, podcaster or Internet TV producer tends to run into. We'll take care of the servers, the software, the workflow, the advertising and the distribution. We leave you free to focus on creativity.

Kids Can Press - Casey at the Bat, Joe Morse illustrator

Visions in Poetry is an exciting and unique series of classic poems
illustrated by outstanding contemporary artists in stunning hardcover
editions. Casey at the Bat, the fourth book in the series, is more
than a poem about a proud and mighty slugger who strikes out during
the big game. It is a slice of baseball lore, as much a part of the
game as hot dogs and the seventh-inning stretch.

Illustrator Joe Morse sets the poem on gritty urban streets with a
multiracial cast of characters. It's a startlingly fresh approach
that not only revives the poem for a new generation, but also brings
it new richness and depth.

Michelada - beer cocktail

The Michelada is a popular Mexican alcoholic beverage of a genre
known in Spanish as cerveza preparada (prepared beer) and in English
as a variety of cocktail. There are several variations. In some cases
it is similar to a Bloody Mary but containing beer instead of vodka,
although a less complicated concoction of Mexican beer with sauces
and lime juice added (see recipe below) is also referred to as a
Michelada. The drink dates back to the 1940s, when mixing beer with
hot sauce or salsa became popular in Mexico. In recent years, the
drink has begun to become popular in the United States, and now
various ready-made mixes are marketed and sold to US consumers.

From the day he founded Etsy in 2005, Rob Kalin refused to raise
money from venture capital firms to expand his company, which hoped
to bring the sale of handmade crafts from small local fairs to the
international marketplace of the Web.

He met with several top firms, but they all wanted a 20 percent stake
in his start-up company, and he was hesitant to give an investor that
much. When one of his board members advised him to visit Fred Wilson
at Union Square Ventures in 2006, he went grudgingly, certain the
meeting would turn out like the others.

Instead, Mr. Kalin was impressed when Mr. Wilson said he would settle
for less than 5 percent of the company in the first round of fund-

Union Square Ventures has built its portfolio making small bets on
young companies.

"We say, 'Let's go on this ride together,' and if we do get great
traction, we'll try to invest in a second round as well," said Brad
Burnham, who co-founded the firm with Mr. Wilson.

As Mr. Kalin soon discovered, the small initial stake was not the
only thing that distinguished Union Square from its competitors.
Grounded in a philosophy of discipline and openness, the three-
partner firm focuses on services that use the Web to change a market
rather than simply make it more efficient.

Mr. Kalin said. "They love the challenge."

Head Butler

Head Butler is founded on a simple proposition: There's so much New Stuff you need help finding the Good Stuff.

If you're like most smart, curious people, you're drowning in media. Open any magazine or paper, turn on any TV or radio station, and you're bombarded by news and advertising that tells you what to think, what to buy, what's really cool and what's totally hot. It's too much. You can't keep up. Or even catch up.

There are two typical responses to Too Much. One is to turn off --- to pay no attention to New Stuff and endlessly recycle your Greatest Hits in books, movies and music. The other is to throw up your hands and consume the culture that everyone around you is buying. Either way, you miss a lot of Good Stuff. So you need a butler. Not like the stuffy gentleman in English movies, but a friendly advisor --- a plugged-in cultural concierge who will tell you about books, music and movies you might never hear about from anyone else.

Girl Turk: Mechanical Turk Meets Girl Talk's "Feed the Animals" -

Girl Talk's Feed the Animals is one of my favorite albums this year, a hyperactive mish-mash sampling hundreds of songs from the last 45 years of popular music. Gregg Gillis created a beautiful, illegal mess of copyright clearance hell, which you should download immediately. (It's free, but I kicked in $20 for Gregg's legal fund and a copy of the CD.)

Last month, Rex Sorgatz asked about collecting metadata on the album for data crunching. After spelunking through Billboard's chart history, that sounded like my idea of a good time.

So I compiled all the data into spreadsheets, used Amazon's Mechanical Turk to collect some additional information, and pulled out a few charts. As always, I've provided CSV downloads for all the data along with the original output from Mechanical Turk, for those interested in experimenting with the platform.
