New style blogs find inspiration in fashionable Moms and Dads back in the day

Most of us wouldn't dare raid our parents' closets today - we already took all the good stuff upon entering the halls of high school where the only duds cooler than those sold at Urban Outfitters were the originals that inspired them. But in this era where many of us strive to look like we stepped out of a '70s Polaroid , we now scour old family albums for fashion ideas. Recognizing that the vinyl three-ring binders collecting dust in the basement may be a better style source than modern fashion glossies, or even street style blogs, a new wave of fashion blogs is paying tribute to Mom and Dad by digging into the vaults for the best looks of their youth.

Cardboard Gods

Cardboard Gods is the memoir of Josh Wilker, a brilliant writer who has marked the stages of his life through the baseball cards he collected as a child. It also captures the experience of growing up obsessed with baseball cards and explores what it means to be a fan of the game. Along the way, as we get to know Josh, his family, and his friends, we also get Josh's classic observations about the central artifacts from his life: the baseball cards themselves. Josh writes about an imagined correspondence with his favorite player, Carl Yastrzemski; he uses the magical bubble-blowing powers of journeyman Kurt Bevacqua to shed light on the weakening of the powerful childhood bond with his older brother; he considers the doomed utopian back-to-the-land dreams of his hippie parents against the backdrop of inimitable 1970s baseball figures such as "Designated Pinch Runner" Herb Washington and Mark "The Bird" Fidrych. Cardboard Gods is more than just the story of a man who can't let go of his past, it's proof that — to paraphrase Jim Bouton — as children we grow up holding baseball cards but in the end we realize that it's really the other way around.

PostPolitics: Washington Post Politics Page, Political News

1. Popten launched August 20, 2008…

2. …if you can really call it a launch- it started as an online home for ten creative folk obsessed with quantifying pop culture.

3. A few months later we told our friends about it.

4. It's grown steadily since, both in bloggers and audience.  (We get an average of 20-30K monthly uniques these days.)

5. Our blogging posse consists of four writers, three film directors, one game designer, a politician, a poet, an artist, a designer, and a robotics major.

6. Popten has been cited in the Chicago Tribune, USA Today and The Onion, among others.

7. We've been honored with guest bloggers from the LA Times, NY Times and Hollywood Reporter.

8. One of our bloggers doesn't exist.

9. Almost all of us live in NYC, which is why we can get Manhattancentric.

10. We hate when people say that they have a lot of exciting plans in the near future, but we have a lot of exciting plans in the near future.

This is travel, not tourism - I Wanna Go There

As an independent traveller I prefer not to use travel agencies or follow set itineraries. I like exploring new places my own way.

Last year, planning my trip to India I started researching the internet to find interesting places, accommodations, etc. I was overloaded with huge amounts of badly organized information and was lost with many non-descript sources. I ended up resorting to the good old paper travel guide.

But the best advice I got was actually on the road meeting other travelers, checking their photos, scribbling tips on napkins and the back of my hand...

That's how was born - to be a site where independent travelers can share up-to-date information and recommendations with other independent travelers – organized in a practical way to help us plan our trips and discover new destinations.
