Spears & Munsil - Home Theater Calibration DVD

Stacey Spears and Don Munsil have written many seminal articles, together and separately, on inside secrets of video decoding, processing, and deinterlacing. They are inventors or co-inventors of multiple patents in video and image processing. They set a new standard for evaluation of DVD players with the DVD Player Benchmark™ and Progressive Scan Shootout at Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity®*. They were the first to publicly document and explain the well-known chroma upsampling error in MPEG-2, H.264 and VC-1 decoders. They created standard-definition test and calibration discs for Anchor Bay Technologies. They have done video encoding and compression for multiple HD DVD and Blu-ray discs, and have consulted for and produced test patterns and evaluation material for a variety of video and consumer electronics companies.

Metaphilm. See through cinema.

Serious, absurd,
sacred, profane,
simple, complex:
We absorb, filter, review, and interpret cinema
for your entertainment and enlightenment.

We strive to fulfill the creed of our
patron saint, Robert Bresson:

Make visible what without you
might perhaps never have been seen.

goatdog's movies

Goatdog is Michael W. Phillips Jr., a writer, editor, and filmmaker living in Chicago. He runs a revival house on the weekends, and does freelance copyediting to pay the bills. He has a master's degree in history, but doesn't use it much. He's been reviewing movies for over 16 years—a statement that is in agreement with the letter, if not the spirit, of the truth.

Michael W. Phillips Jr. is not Michael Phillips, the film critic for the Chicago Tribune, although he would like to have that job. And we both know who the original Michael Phillips is.

Goatdog was Pookie, a mutt that looked a bit like a dirty sheep. He disappeared in 1993 in the woods surrounding Manistee, Michigan. He has not approved of my use of his nickname.
